PharmascienceSession A: The Evolution of Pharmacy Practice in Canada: The Future is Here
1:00 pm to 2:00 pm
Pan Am Room
1 CEU

Sandra Carey, Vice President, B.Sc.Pharm, RPH
Strategic Innovation and Business Development
The Health Initiative Inc

This program is an overview of the changing landscape of pharmacy practice across Canada. Governments are changing the reimbursement models in pharmacies in all provinces seeking more care and treatment for less money. Pharmacists are being challenged on their lack of engagement with expanded practice initiatives. Through a review of upcoming and current legislative changes, barriers and challenges impacting the evolving scope are explored. The changing role of pharmacy technicians and the impact on day-to-day business and professional operations in the Pharmacy will also be presented. Material is drawn from the literature e.g., NAPRA Model Standards of practice for Canadian Pharmacists; Blueprint for Pharmacy: Designing the Future Together

This session is sponsored by Pharmascience

Session B: QT Prolongation

Dr. Mark H. Friesen, B.Sc.Pharm, M.Sc.Pharm, PharmD.
Clinical Pharmacy Specialist
Grace Hospital

Torsade de Pointes (TdP) is a potentially fatal arrhythmia that is always preceded by a lengthening of the QT interval on the EKG. Many medications are known to prolong the QT interval and increase the risk of TdP. Often drug interaction programs produce a warning of risk for TdP with medications known to prolong the QT interval but it is often unclear what to do. This presentation will suggest an approach for what to do in such situations.

Refreshment Break

Session C: Controversy Vaccination
3:30 pm to 5:00 pm
Pan Am Room
1.5 CEU

Shawn Bugden, B.Sc.Pharm
Associate Professor
Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Manitoba

As Manitoba pharmacists move towards an expanded scope of practice that would allow pharmacist administered vaccines, we move to the centre of the vaccination controversy. While vaccination represents one of the greatest public health triumphs in medical history, there has been a significant public backlash against vaccines. This session reviews the background to this controversy and seeks to immunize pharmacists with the information necessary to allow evidence informed discussions regarding vaccines and their safety.

Wine & Cheese Reception/Young Leaders Award Presentation
5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Room 2E

Awards are offered to new pharmacists and pharmacy students in their final year. The award is given to pharmacists/pharmacy
students who have made a professional impact in their community or amongst their peers in the Faculty, and in the case of
pharmacists, those who have been in practice for less than 5 years.

These awards afford the new pharmacist the opportunity of experiencing the professional development gained through participation in the Annual Manitoba Pharmacy Conference.

This award is sponsored by the Manitoba Society of Pharmacists and the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association.
